SEALANTS AND ADHESIVES
Priority of choice

Best choice

Good alternatives
Less recommended / Better to avoid
  • Water-based latex caulks
  • Siliconized latex sealants,
  • Solvent-free silicone caulks for wet areas,
  • Acrylic sealants, solvent-free / with very low VOCs.
  • Polyurethane sealants (single- and two-component),
  • Butyl rubber and synthetic rubber caulks.
Tips for healthier choice
  • Choose caulks and adhesives with low or no VOCs (ideally less than 25-50 g/L for interior applications).
  • Prefer caulk-type sealants over spray foam; use foam tape if foam is necessary.
  • Check the ingredients list and avoid health-harming products: petroleum solvents, ethylene glycol, isocyanates, formaldehyde, phthalates and bisphenol A, ethylene glycol, toluene, xylene, or acetone.
  • Avoid mold-resistant sealants unless absolutely needed for high-humidity or wet environments.
  • Favour mechanical fastening and design features (like weatherlaps) where possible to reduce sealant reliance.
  • Always apply in well-ventilated spaces and follow safety instructions.
  • Wear protective personal equipment (PPE) when handling sealants and adhesives.
